Saskatoon! The early morning ride across the prairies from Regina on our private bus was lovely fun, giving the GMP team time to make merry or catch up on some sleep, each according to his or her needs. Then it was on to the VIP reception in the friendly confines of our original S’toon home, TCU Place. Regina had been a total blast; Saskatoon was just as brimfull with positive energy, the sold-out crowd hanging on emcee Catriona Le May Doan’s every word and bidding like crazy on our enticing auction trips. Once again the musicians wowed the room, playing on after everything was over to the delight of all. A huge thank you to Jim Cuddy, Ed Robertson, Barney Bentall, Anne Lindsay, Devin Cuddy and Sam Polley.

david-new-2014Wine Report
by David Lawrason, National Wine Advisor

Three excellent and unexpected finalists faced off for the Best of Show competition in Saskatoon. They represented wine’s experimental edge in both B.C. and Ontario. Congratulations to the chefs for seeking them out and for the province of Saskatchewan for allowing this “non-listed” wines to be brought into the province without normal mark-ups applying.

Moon Cursor 2013 Syrah took top honours – a gorgeous, rich yet poised red that billowed ripe black cherry fruit, smoke, licorice. It is from a small winery a stone’s throw from the U.S. border in Osoyoos that has specialized in small lots of reds from varieties not often found in Canada. Syrah is common on these parts, but they also work with varieties like petit verdot and tempranillo.

The second runner was Pearl Morrisette 2013 Cuvee Redfoot Riesling from the Creek Shores appellation in the Niagara Peninsula.  This too is cutting edge, made in a more natural and oxidative, less fruit forward style but showing great balance and depth.

And in third place another experimental southern Okanagan – the very ripe, plummy Inniskillin 2014 Discovery Series Zinfandel that matched very well with the gold medal plate of elk and tenderloin by Scott Torgerson of Radisson Hotel Saskatoon and Aroma Resto Bar.  Zinfandel is ubiquitous in California but rare in Canada’s northerly latitudes.

The Best of Show Award was deigned to recognize and honour the wineries, breweries and distilleries that donate so generously to Gold Medal Plates.  Andrew Peller is one of the largest donors year after year.  Canada’s largest family-owned wine company owns familiar brands like Trius, Wayne Gretzky, Red Rooster and Sandhill, brands that Saskatoon guests enjoyed this night.

Our all-Saskatchewan panel of Best of Show judges consisted of three fine palates, two of whom had also lent their talents in Regina as well. Gavin Jensen is a super-enthusiast, with a winemaking project in Washington, and Robert Peterson-Wakeman, is our warehouse sommelier (distribution logistics by day and wine lover by night.  This year we were joined for the first time by Dawn Wreford certified sommelier who manages the Co-Op Wine and Spirits private store in west Saskatoon, which most consider the finest wine store in the province.
